Check vs Stripes: What Team Are You On This Spooky SZN

Halloween is creeping up on us (19 days to be exact) and this year the Oregon ( A.K.A Nike) and German brand (adidas) rivalry shows no signs of waning, with both sneaker brands putting in that extra legwork to make this haunting season a little more spooky. Whether you are an advocate for the checks or stripes, both sneaker entities have had quite a history within the Halloween department.

Check VS Stripes

I’m sure you’ll remember adidas sunk their teeth into a ‘Dracula’ themed Forum and let’s not forget when Nike went all anatomy-based with their skeletal Air Force 1. Or when adidas turned their Superstars from terrace to terror, and how could we forget the Nike Freddy Kruegers? I mean we could be here for days handpicking our favourite creepy contenders, but what’s important is to see what’s in store for the Halloween lineup this year.

With that being said, we’ve selected our top 3 Halloween picks from both brands, so you can decide which brand is on point this season. Because I’m sure nothing chills your cockles more than bagging a trick rather than a treat.

In the red corner, we have Nike

1. Nike Ja 1 ‘Zombie’

Nike Ja 1 'Zombie'

Nike kicks off the countdown with a Zombie-esque version of the Nike Ja 1. As facing the hardwoods wasn’t daunting enough, the sneaker ups the ante with a textural green upper which backdrops an evidently darker shade of green that promenades the Swoosh, heel counter, laces, and tongue. Ghoulish handprints adorn the heel to complete this thrilling execution.

2. Nike SB Dunk High ‘Candy Corn’

Nike SB Dunk Low 'Candy Corn'

We’re in for a treat for this Nike SB Dunk High. Nike pulled off the ultimate snack with their brightly executed ‘Candy Corn’ iteration. This fit comes cladded in a gradient yellow-orange-to-white colour scheme and is bedded with a ‘Candy Corn’ decorated insole. This is a sneaker that is worth sinking your teeth into and we’re not just talking about the bite marks on the toe box.

3. Nike Air Force 1 Low ‘Halloween’

Air Force 1 Low 'Halloween'

Bold and eerie is the latest subject of the Air Force 1 Low ‘Halloween’. This inner-city sneaker swaps its conventional smooth leather tooling for a snakeskin textured upper. While stealthy accents of black make up the majority of the fit, goblin shades of green deliver a ghastly feel underfoot. And let’s not forget the Jack ‘O Lantern-shaped lace jewel that ties together this decadent design.

In the blue corner, we have adidas

1. adidas Forum Mod Low ‘Jack O’Lantern’

adidas Forum Mod Low ‘Jack O’ Lantern’

Cute but cynical in the same breath. From the pumpkin appliqued heels to its canvas embossed uppers, this adidas Forum Mod Low is the sneaker equivalent of your favourite scarecrow. Brown overstitch adds a rustic feel to its textural design and its signature 3-stripes are bedded in a translucent netting, adding a sinister touch to its heritage.

2. adidas Adimatic ‘Halloween’

adidas offers a creepy feel to one of its chunkiest lifestyle variants - the Adimatic. Supple black nubuck takes centre stage, providing a canvas for its spiderweb detailing on the heel. Tinges of orange inscribe the sockliner and zig-zag overlays that appear on the midsole, while a trio of laces cement the frightening Halloween vibe.

3. adidas Harden Vol.7 ‘Jack O’Lantern’

adidas Harden Vol.7 ‘Jack O’Lantern’

The pumpkin theme has proven quite popular within the sneaker verse this October, but this adidas Harden Vo.7 ‘Jack O’Lantern might just take the MVP spot. Arriving in a Halloween-appropriated orange and black and white colour scheme, with skeletal overlays on the toe box providing that extra ghoulish appeal. Pumpkin detailing on the heel tops off this court-ready design.
